The term mambises refers to Cuban independence soldiers who fought against Spain in the Ten Years’ War (1868-1878) and Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898). Those revolutionaries consisted of Cubans from all social classes including free blacks, slaves, and mulattos fighting for their freedom.
